Range

From Tenderfoot Tactics

Every active skill has a range, indicated by Range. Ranges restrict the horizontal grid distance from which an action can take place, relative to the action's user. They are expressed as single-value or double-value numbers.

Single-value ranges indicate the maximum allowed distance from the originator. Skills of this kind have an implied minimum allowed distance of 0, meaning they can target the action's user directly. For example, the first aid skill can be used on adjacent units or on oneself. Skills with a range of 0 are always centered on the user. Some 0-range skills affect the entire battlefield.

Some actions display a double-value range, which restricts both the minimum and maximum distance (inclusive) for the action's target. Some ranges may display the same number as both min and max, which means that the action is strictly limited to that value. For example, repulse has Range 1-1, meaning it can only target adjacent tiles and cannot self-target.

The player's units will highlight their attack ranges while they are selected. While hovering over a tile in the unit's movement range, the highlighted attack range will update as well.

Height[edit]

Ranges do not indicate Height height restrictions, and most ranged attacks can target tiles that are much higher or lower than the caster. However, many melee attacks (i.e., moves with a range of 1) cannot be performed if the difference in height is too large: a goblin cannot attack a tile more than half their height upwards, and more than their full height downwards. Height seems to vary per breed, and some enemy classes, like giants and behemoths, have a much higher height than playable breeds.

Line of Sight[edit]

Generally, ranged actions do not require direct line-of-sight. Many attacks can be performed through impassable tiles and will not hit units standing in the way of the attack, unless the shape of the attack permits. Some moves, such as charge and ram, require a clear path from the user to the target tile, although this is uncommon.
